House Styles

Louisiana possesses many different “house styles.” Each style has evolved over time and will continue to evolve. Many of the intricacies and unique aspects of Louisiana house styles have resulted from climatic conditions, cultural lifestyles and geographical concerns. These factors help to establish an architectural language unique to Louisiana.

The housing styles that are specific to the Louisiana region are known as Vernacular types. In addition to the Louisiana Vernacular, several other styles are present in Louisiana including the Victorian, Classical, Arts and Crafts, Ranch and Modern styles. Although these later styles did not originate in Louisiana, they have been modified by the people of Louisiana and now find a place within the culture and context of the region.

The Louisiana Vernacular is an indigenous style of housing that has many identifying architectural elements. Generally, the style uses deep porches, high ceilings, full-length windows and French doors. These elements help maximize energy efficiency. The deep porches create pockets of shade on the exterior while the high ceilings allow heat to rise above occupied space in the interior. The use of French doors and tall windows helps encourage air movement through the house, in return cooling the space and limiting the need for supplemental heat-reducing elements.
